 Materials Needed:

Paper Towels                          Lab donation - $10 for chemicals and lab equipment


Three ring 1.5 or 2 inch binder with 2 dividers (one for homework, one for classwork) - you should have a separate folder specifically for chemistry!!!  


Composition notebook (hard bound where you can’t tear out the pages) for notes.


 Prerequisites: Honors Physical Science and Biology with a grade of B or better**


                     Honors Math I and Math II with a grade of B or better**


   **If you do not meet these requirements, this class will likely be too hard for you. I would recommend that you take this class after you meet these requirements.


 Class Rules


- Bring all materials (chemistry book, calculator, sharpened pencil, and folders) to class and be seated with all materials BEFORE the bell rings. Use the restroom BEFORE class. I will not allow you to leave class after the bell rings per the RHS policy “Students can’t be excused from class except in the case of an emergency” (p. 2 Growler). If you enter class after the bell rings, you will be counted as tardy.

- Follow directions given by the teacher.

- Stay on Task & Do your best at all times on every class and home-based assignment.

- Practice verbal and physical control by treating others the way you would want to be treated, i.e. keep your hands, feet, pencils, etc. to yourself.




It is important that you are here on time each day in order to keep up with the material. The Catoosa County Student Handbook policy will be upheld which states that a referral to the Attendance Review Team will occur at 5 unexcused absences and “High school students who miss more than 10 unexcused absences risk losing their driver's permit or driver's license and work permit” (p. 35 Student Handbook).

The RHS tardy policy:

1st and 2nd tardy: Teacher Warning

3rd-5th: Referral to Administrator (Lunch detention)

6th and 7th: Referral to Administrator (Saturday school)

8th-10th: Referral to Administrator (ISS-one day)

11th and beyond: Referral to Administrator (ISS-3 days; No field trips and possibly pull parking permit)

“Secondary students tardy to school will not be permitted to participate in extra-curricular activities on the day of the tardy unless approved by an administrator” (p.29 SH).


Semester Grade


The semester grade is determined as follows: each nine weeks grade counts 42.5% of the overall grade with the comprehensive final exam counting 15%. Tests count 50% and daily work (quizzes and labs) count 50% of the nine weeks grade. I will post your grades on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal site.

*You may be exempt from the final if you have an A average and 3 absences, B average and 2 absences, C average and 1 absence, or a D average and 0 absences (p. 22 SH). Therefore, you are rewarded if you are here every day!!!

Homework will be assigned every night. Chemistry is a challenging class that requires a lot of independent practice. The purpose of homework is to help you review the material taught in class and to meet the new Common Core Curriculum standards for reading and writing. Since homework is so important, there will be a building quiz every day over the previous night’s homework. If you have completed the work, you should do well on the quiz.

Each nine weeks your homework will be averaged and will count as one test grade. Missed homework assignments will be treated as follows:

1 missed homework - a zero for that homework and a warning.

2 missed homeworks - a zero for that homework and a warning.

3 missed homeworks - a zero for that homework and your parents will be called.

5 missed homeworks - a zero for that homework, a parent will be called, and an administrator will be notified.




Unit tests will consist of the following parts: vocabulary, math problems, and previous material. Tests will count 50% of the nine weeks grade. Missed tests due to absences (excused or unexcused) will consist of essay/constructed response questions and can only be taken the 1st Wednesday after the original test date. If you don’t show on the assigned day to take the retest, you will receive a zero for the test. SLO pre-tests and post-test scores will be administered by the classroom teacher and results will be reported to the state of GA.


Help Sessions


Individual help is available by appointment Monday-Friday from 3:30 – 4:00 PM. This is the best time to get help if you are having trouble in class. Extended tutoring sessions may be held Wednesdays at 7:15AM upon request. It is much better to get help as soon as you don’t understand something instead of waiting until later.


Honor Code


I promise not to lie, cheat, plagiarize, or assist others in those actions. If you are caught cheating (copying from another student or using an internet source/other resource without proper citations) or helping others cheat (allowing them to copy your work), you will receive a grade of zero for the entire assignment and will not be allowed to make it up. This includes labs, quizzes, homework, and tests.

Make-UP Work (due to excused absences)


All make-up work is the responsibility of the student and must be completed in accordance with the board policy. Please see Classroom Procedures for the process of obtaining make-up work.

 I use a point system for grades. All unit tests and culminating assignments are worth 100 points each. Other assignments such as journals, labs, projects, homework, quizzes, etc. will be assigned a point value based on its academic value.


Parent Notification


Parents will be notified at least four times a semester in the form of progress grades at the 4 ½ weeks and nine week grading periods. Additional notification will be on a student by student basis. Please expect these notifications of progress from the student because they will not be mailed home. Please use your Parent Portal account often to check the status of your student. Please feel free to contact me at any time about progress.
